Which gift card for which country? Region locks explained

Why a card from another country does not work on your account, and how to check your account country on each platform before you buy.

Why cards are tied to a country

Most digital gift cards are sold for one country or region. The code adds money in that country's currency to an account registered in that country, because each country has its own store, prices and taxes. A UK PlayStation card cannot be added to a French PlayStation account, and a US Apple card does not work on a German Apple Account.

The country that matters is the one of the account that will use the code, not the country you live in or where you buy the card. On Kadokey, each product page shows the card's country or region and tells you whether it matches the country you selected.

Check your account country first

Before buying, check the country of the account on the platform the card is for:

  • PlayStation Store: PS5 or PS4 Settings, then Users and Accounts, then Account; or account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com. The country of a PlayStation account cannot be changed, so the card must match it.
  • Xbox and Microsoft: the country or region of your Microsoft account, shown at account.microsoft.com under Your info.
  • Nintendo eShop: the country in your Nintendo Account settings (accounts.nintendo.com).
  • Steam: your store country and wallet currency, shown in your Steam account details.
  • Google Play: the country of your Google Play payments profile, in the Play Store app under Settings, then General, then Account and device preferences.
  • Apple: the country or region of your Apple Account, in Settings on iPhone or at account.apple.com.

Euro, Europe and Global cards

Using the same currency does not always mean the same store. For example, PlayStation and Nintendo run a separate store for each country, so a German euro card is not the same as a French euro card: choose the card for your account's country.

Some cards are sold for a whole region, such as "Europe", or as "Global" cards that work in many countries. In that case the product page says so, and lists where the card works.

A few cards, such as some payment vouchers, must be used in a given currency or on websites that accept that currency: the product page tells you.

Can I change my account country?

Sometimes, but it is rarely worth it just to use a card:

  • PlayStation: not possible, you would need a new account.
  • Google Play: you can change your country only once a year, and your Google Play balance stays in the old country.
  • Apple: you must spend your balance and cancel subscriptions first.
  • Nintendo and Microsoft: possible, but a balance in the old currency may no longer be usable.

It is easier and safer to buy the card for the country your account already uses.

Buying a card as a gift

If the card is a present, check the country of the other person's account, not yours. A friend in Spain with a Spanish PlayStation account needs a Spanish card, even if you live in Germany.

When you are not sure, ask them, or choose a card that works in more than one country if one exists for that brand. You can send the code by e-mail or message: the person redeems it on their own account.

Frequently asked questions

4 answers to common questions

Usually not. Most cards only work on accounts registered in the country or region they were made for. Check your account country before you buy.

No. Many brands, such as PlayStation and Nintendo, have one store per country, so you need the card for the country of your account, even if it uses the euro.

The code will be refused by your account. A digital code cannot be returned once it has been shown, so check the country before you buy, or contact us at once if you made a mistake.

Each product page shows the card country or region and whether it matches the country you selected at the top of the site.
