Start with the device they play on
A gaming gift card adds money to the account of one platform, and that money can only be spent there. So the first question is simple: what does the person play on?
- A PlayStation 5 or 4: a PlayStation Store card.
- An Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One or a Windows PC with Game Pass: an Xbox gift card.
- A Nintendo Switch or Switch 2: a Nintendo eShop card.
- A gaming PC or a Steam Deck: a Steam card.
- Mostly one game, on any device: a card for that game, such as Roblox or Fortnite.
- A phone or tablet: Google Play for Android, Apple for iPhone and iPad.
The cards side by side
- PlayStation Store: adds funds to the PlayStation wallet. Pays for PS5 and PS4 games, add-ons, game currencies and PlayStation Plus.
- Xbox: adds credit to the Microsoft account. Pays for Xbox and Windows games, add-ons and Xbox Game Pass.
- Nintendo eShop: adds funds to the Nintendo Account. Pays for Switch and Switch 2 games, DLC and Nintendo Switch Online.
- Steam: adds funds to the Steam Wallet. Pays for PC games, DLC and items on the Steam Community Market.
- Roblox: adds credit to the Roblox account, for Robux or Roblox Premium. Roblox runs on phones, tablets, computers and consoles, with the same account everywhere.
- Fortnite: adds balance to the Epic Games account, for V-Bucks, Fortnite Crew and games on the Epic Games Store.
Each card works only on its own platform: a PlayStation card cannot be used on Xbox, and the other way round.
Which card for which player?
- They play many different games on one console: the card of that console's store (PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo). They choose the game themselves.
- They play mostly on PC: a Steam card covers the largest PC game store, including frequent sales.
- They spend most of their time in Roblox or Fortnite: a Roblox or Fortnite card, which works across their devices.
- They subscribe to an online service: PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online can all be paid with the matching store card.
- They play on a phone: a Google Play or Apple card covers games and in-app purchases.
Two checks before you buy
First, the country: the card must match the country of the person's account, not yours (see which card for which country).
Second, the amount: look at the price of the game, pass or currency pack they want on the platform's store, and choose a card that covers it. Smaller amounts suit add-ons and game currencies; a new full game often needs a larger card.
